Haenyeo Spreads
Context: Editorial pages that highlight the community of Korean women called
Haenyeo who devote their lives to harvesting the sea. With strength and
skill they pridefully fight the tough waves of the sea for multiple hours at
a time and protect their tradition through conserving old equipment and
by passing their practice down to the next generation.
Design:
In these opening and turn spreads, I used an illustrative typeface to
mimic bubbles that float up from the bottom of the page to frame the
imagery. The subtitles also follow this idea of underwater and sinking. I
sourced strong photography that shows the pride and tradition of this
practice and gave them space on the page to make a significant impact
on the reader. Details such as wavy underlining highlight important parts
of the article as well as interview questions.
